Updates

This is my blog, where occasional updates and news related to Afro-Mexico will be published.  Please let me know if you’d like to publicize an event and I’d be happy to include it in my modest site.  I am not a blogger and probably won’t be post much!  But if people comment, I might be drawn into more participation!

  1. I am extremely interested to visit Costa Chica. It would be the beginning of October until the 14 October. What is the best way to get there from Acapulco (I am travelling from Canada)? I would be travelling probably alone; should I be concerned? Is it apt to be very rainy? My late partner/husband was Mexican and thus I am interested in learning everything possible about his country as we never had the opportunity to discover it together.

    Thank you in advance.

    • Hello Charlotte,

I encourage you to travel to the Costa Chica alone as long as 1) you’ve traveled to Mexico or a Spanish speaking country before and are comfortable with Spanish, and 2) you don’t mind roughing it a bit. I guess I’d like to know more about you and any rural traveling experiences you’ve had before I could offer you some useful tips. The weather is likely to be hot, but perhaps the rains will have begun to subside by October. Whether alone or with a traveling partner I definitely encourage you to go to Mexico; I just want you to be safe and have a great experience.

  2. Hi Bobby,
Thanks for your quick response. Yes, I have travelled to other Spanish-speaking countries (I love languages) and my late partner was Mexican. He said my spanish was pretty good (I think he was prejudiced). I love “hot” weather living here in Montreal where our winters are never-ending. And I am definitely not touristy. I told Gerardo I would never go to Cancun as I felt it would be too touristy. We were planning to retire in Merida where Gerardo has a daughter and her family. I was also thinking of visiting San Cristobal de las Casas until people were warning me not to go alone.

    Thank you for your input.
